Presidents Day 2025

Presidents Day 2025

Helen Todd10 Aug - 09:05

A day of celebration..........

Last Sunday we hosted our annual Presidents Day to celebrate the successes of the season, to thank our VP's for their continued support and to honour the memory of a very special player at our club, the late Mike Elsam.

Our Chairman Bill Green and President Ian Todd welcomed our two guests of honour, Joshua Reynolds MP and Helen Elsam. Both Bill and Ian extended their thanks to our sponsors for their continued support of the cricket club, which helps with the colts development, professional coaching costs, grounds kit and beyond. Special mention to Steve and Jo at Full Production for building our new electronic score board which is a fantastic addition to the club and to Sian at The Cricketers for carrying on the tradition of the pub being our club house, and for our cricket club area - Mike Elsam's corner.

Thanks were extended to all the committee members who keep the club running, our grounds staff (we know we have the best in the area!), our coaches/team managers, club members, those who helped cook and serve our lunch and to Dave and Paula for keeping us hydrated.

Our President also wanted to thank Joshua Reynolds for putting forward an Early Day Motion in Parliament recognising the 1st adult women's league match in the 215 year history of the club this summer.

As is tradition with Presidents Day now, we were delighted to ask Joshua Reynolds and Mary Gilbert to present our Colts Caps, recognising our colts who during this season have moved up to play in the adults section. Unfortunately a few were unable to attend but we will find a special time to present them their caps before the season ends.

And finally we remembered with fondness the memory of Mike Elsam and how much cricket was a huge part of his and Helen's lives - Helen was our scorer for 12 years. Many of Mike's team mates were able to join us for the afternoon and play against our Presidents 11 (14). Thanks to Tim Latham for his warm speech regaling us with some fond memories, albeit slightly watered down for our mixed audience, which gave us a small insight in to Mike's love of the game.

Mike was a star batsman who won our 1st XI batting award 10 times, scoring over 1,000 runs seven years in a row, winning the Berkshire League Batsman of the Year Award and in 1988 scored 1,750 runs including seven centuries. He remains one of the club's most famous players across Berkshire and the Thames Valley and we were so pleased to be able to celebrate his memory by playing in his honour at Littlewick Green on Presidents Day.
